Paua is a unique multi-coloured shellfish found in the cool fresh waters around the coasts of New Zealand. It is the cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean that give the shell its distinctive green, blue and purple hues, making it one of the most sought after and beautiful shells in the world. The Māori consider this shell a taonga (treasure), a gift of the sea from the Sea god. It is highly regarded by Māori who use it in their carvings to reflect the night light making them more life like and thus people felt that they were being looked over at night whilst they slept.
